  3. Roasted Vegetable Strudel

    08/10/2011 by Perdita

    {lang: 'en-GB'}
    This week’s hot meal at the Pickled Pelican has been the Roasted Vegetable Strudel with Basil Pesto and Fetta.

    Roasted Vegetable Strudel with a Salad

    Couldn’t make it in to try it?   Chef Katy shares her recipe with you so you can try it at home.  This recipe is extremely easy to make, and is delicious when served with a salad.

    Ingredients required:
    Roasted vegetables of your choice – Chef Katy uses chargrilled capsicum, eggplant + zucchini
    Basil pesto
    Fetta cheese
    Sundried tomatoes
    Ready made puff pastry sheets
    1 egg, beaten, to brush

    How to make it:
    Set your oven to 180 degrees.  Place a sheet of pastry on greaseproof paper on an oven tray.  Layer the middle of your pastry with pesto, roasted vegetables, fetta and your sundried tomatoes.

    Here you can see the layers being built in the middle of the pastry.

    Roll your pastry over  to make a log shape and seal.   Brush the top of your strudel with egg, put a couple of cuts across the top for decoration, and bake till golden brown …..

    Strudel just out of the oven

    Cut into serves and serve with a delicious salad.   Ta da!! quick, easy  and tasty.  Let us know if you tried this recipe, we’d love to know how it turned out!

  6. Pelican Switcheroo!

    23/06/2011 by Perdita

    {lang: 'en-GB'}
    Friday things will look a little strange in Portland!  If you head into your local Westpac Bank, you may be a little surprised to find the local Westpac staff wearing a Pickled Pelican Apron!  Head up to visit us here at the Pelican, and you will catch our staff wearing the bright red Westpac baseball caps!
    Westpac local bank manager, Shaun, is very supportive of local Portland businesses, and was only too happy to help promote new business in the town by becoming honorary Pickled Pelican members for the day.  It’s not often you will see your local bank manager and his staff wearing aprons to work, so head in and say hello to the helpful staff at your local branch, and then drop over to the Pickled Pelican for a coffee and say hello to Katy and the team.
    It is also Red Nose Day tomorrow, and you may catch a glimpse of some of our Pelicans in the cafe with their cute little red noses!

  7. First Week in Business!

    20/06/2011 by Perdita

    Hellooooo Portland!

    Luscious Orange Hot Chocolate

    Well our first week in business has been hectic to say the least!  We weren’t quite ready to open, but jumped in the deep end and it has certainly been a huge learning curve.  We have some absolutely wonderful staff now working for us, and I hope you all drop in to say hello.

    Our coffee and hot chocolates have certainly been a hit, understandably as we are offering the freshest coffee in Portland, roasted and ground on demand.  Our rain water tanks from WaterStore Poly Tanks have gone in, and we are now using pure fresh rainwater for all our coffees and drinks, filtered twice for that extra purity.

    The biscuits have certainly been popular, passionfruit yoyo’s dipped in white chocolate, and espresso pinwheels to mention a few.  And the luscious vanilla slices and cheesecakes have been much appreciated.

    Chef Katy is mixing up the menu at the moment, so there is always something new and different available to eat in the Pickled Pelican.

    Thank you for your support, people of Portland, we have had a blast this week.  Thank you for bearing with us as we learn the ropes and find our feet.

  8. Pickled Pelican has a mini opening!

    09/06/2011 by Perdita

    {lang: 'en-GB'}

    The Pickled Pelican had an exciting day today with a mini opening!  We were planning to open on Tuesday but had the excitement on Monday of having our air conditioner catch fire due to a power surge.  Unfortunately this caused a bit of damage to the cafe, which meant we had to put off our opening for another few days.

    But the next door car yard were having their big day today, so we had a mini opening and offered coffee and cake.  We had about 60 lovely visitors to our cafe and served up many cups of our excellent gourmet coffees and luscious housemade biscuits!

    We enjoyed ourselves immensely and that everyone who visited us today.  We are now looking forward to our “real” opening in a couple of days, and we hope to see you there.

    The Pickled Pelican Team!

  9. Power surge hits the Pelican!

    06/06/2011 by Perdita

    {lang: 'en-GB'}

    Only a day before our scheduled opening day, a power surge hit the Pickled Pelican, setting alight our air conditioner and resulting in about $5000 damage to equipment in the cafe.

    Luckily people were on site at the time, when the fluroescent lights started blinking, the fridge made strange noises and the doorbell rang continuously.  An electrician on site at the time detected the power surge, and then the air conditioner caught fire.  Luckily the  Portland Urban Fire Brigade were not far away.  Two trucks and seven firefighters turned up to help, but by that time the fire had been extinguished.  All equipment was turned off until Powercor were able to visit and check what had caused the power surge.

    We would like to extend our thanks to the tradesmen who were in the cafe at the time, and the valiant Firefighters who turned up to help us, it was much appreciated!

    We were planning on opening the Pickled Pelican Cafe tomorrow, but unfortunately we will need to put this off for a couple more days while we recover from the damage.

    Here is a copy of  the article the Portland Observer ran about our excitement.  pickled-pelican-fire-in-airconditioner-newspaper-article
